ABOUT

Good Root Growers has been a family business since 2013. Owners Sue Gerlach and husband, Allen Freiermuth, are both natives to Northwest Wisconsin and long time gardeners. The 30-acre parcel, purchased in 2002 became their home in 2010 when they re-located to the area from Hudson, WI. In 2018, all 10 acres of field was planted in Monarch habitat and 250 trees as wildlife habitat NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Services) program.

“I always dreamed of working in greenhouse but never thought I’d own one.” The couple bought the business (then known as Prairie Farm Gardens) in 2013 from neighbor, Steve Hearth.  Having a year of mentorship as part of the arrangement provided a seamless transition for the business and customers alike.

Suzanne’s background is in project management. “Planning the work and working the plan” is a great fit for managing details in the greenhouse. She also is the operational manager for Farmer To Farmer coffee (non-profit providing direct trade organic coffee) since 2011 in addition to other consulting/contract work. Allen is a production manager in the trades industry. Complementing the business, is his experience in customer service, landscape/lawn maintenance and master gardener training.

Sue is also proud to be involved with the Hay River Transition Initiative a nationwide movement to create resilient rural areas through local sourcing and green education.

Allen enjoys foraging wild edibles such as mushrooms, hunting turkey, game birds and deer, raising chickens and tapping maple syrup on their land.
